RBI mandates EDF bank filings for freelancers and YouTubers earning foreign currency

The Reserve Bank of India is introducing new reporting rules under FEMA for individuals in India receiving foreign currency.
The requirement applies to people earning from freelancing, YouTube, online tutoring, coaching, or remote consulting.
Covered professionals and creators earning from abroad must file an EDF declaration directly with their banks.
The new reporting requirement states an effective date of October 2026, while separate reports cite an October 1 start.
The rules take effect from October 2026.
For Indian professionals and creators earning foreign income from overseas clients or U.S. platforms, an EDF filing with banks is required under the new rules.
